Rediscovering myself through Urdu

Rediscovering myself through Urdu

For the longest time, I believed my days of learning were behind me. Like most people, I spent my school and college years looking forward to the day I would no longer have to study. Adulthood, I thought, meant leaving classrooms behind and focusing on work, responsibilities, and everything else life demanded.

I never imagined that becoming a student again would become one of the most fulfilling parts of my adult life.

In May 2025, during a late-night Instagram scrolling session, I came across an advertisement for a course called Learning the Urdu Script. It was nearly one in the morning, and I wasn't looking for anything in particular. Usually, an impulse purchase at that hour would have been a piece of clothing or makeup. Instead, I found myself enrolling in an Urdu course.

I rarely make quick decisions, especially when it comes to spending money. But something about that course instantly felt right. I had been missing Urdu without fully realising it, and before I could overthink it, I had enrolled. Looking back, it remains one of the best decisions I've made in years.

Introduction to Urdu Language, Literature and Culture
9 hrs long
37 chapters

The course quickly became something I looked forward to every week. Amid the routine of corporate life, those classes gave me a welcome pause. They reminded me that learning doesn't always have to be connected to work or career growth. Sometimes, learning is simply about finding joy in discovering something new.

As someone who has spent the past eight years teaching on various edtech platforms, I was especially impressed by the thought and care behind every class. Adult learners aren't easy to teach, yet every session felt well-planned, engaging, and supportive.

From the quality of the study material and the expertise of the teachers to homework reviews, doubt-clearing sessions, and prompt support, every detail reflected genuine dedication.

After completing Learning the Urdu Script, I knew I wasn't ready to stop. I enrolled in Urdu Poetry Appreciation, and each class deepened my understanding of a language I had always admired. Reading poetry became more meaningful, and I found myself appreciating the beauty and depth of Urdu in an entirely new way.

For me, Urdu has never been just a language. It lives in poetry that makes us instinctively say "waah" in timeless songs, memorable film dialogues, and countless expressions woven into our everyday lives. It is an important part of our shared cultural heritage, and I believe preserving and learning it is more meaningful today than ever before.

What began as an impulse purchase has become a lasting part of my life. More than learning a script or understanding poetry, I rediscovered the happiness of being a student again. And that's a feeling I hope never to lose.
